As they say, my people hail from the Midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa). For 17 years following high school, I worked a variety of jobs in WI and MT. I aspired to be a carpenter's apprentice; completing one year of schooling and employment in a cabinet shop. Then I turned to videography - self-taught - doing life reviews with elders. I also ran a successful small business for 15 years; cleaning residential and commercial homes and businesses. There was also my work as a wheel-line irrigator in Helena where I moved wheel-lines on a dirt bike or horse, depending on the height of the alfalfa. During the off season, I managed a used book store.

In 1987 I went to college, at the age of 35, single parent to my 9 year old son. My rational was this: I could continue to clean houses and my body would hold out as long as it could (unproductive suffering), or I could work and go to school and get a profession by the time my son graduated high school, and I could get a life of my own as he launched into his life (productive suffering). I took 6 years to complete my undergraduate degree in Psychology. I then switched my major to Social Work because I loved the emphasis of "person-in-environment" over the focus on primarily mental process.
I was accepted at Eastern Washington University to complete my Masters of Social Work (MSW) at Cheney, WA. The emphasis was a "rural generalist" which meant learning a bit about issues facing many populations in a rural setting where resources and support are limited. The other emphasis in this program was a "strength's perspective". This meant we were focused on what strengths clients came through our door with, in order to capitalize on their inner resources and resilience to resolve difficulties. My fundamental practicum was at the Single Parent Outreach office, and my advanced practicum was at the Women's Drop-In Center, both in Spokane.
